Digital Pen
Frequently Asked Questions

red triangle Who makes the pens?
red square Two companies make digital pens, Maxell® and Logitech®.

red triangle How big are the pens?
The Maxell pen is 6.18 inches long and weighs 1.06 ounces. The Logitech pen is 6.17 inches long and weighs 1.32 ounces.

red triangle Is the pen for left-and right-handed users?
red square The pen works for both left-and right-handed users.

red triangle Is the digital pen waterproof?
red square No, the digital pen is not waterproof. Do not use the digital pen in locations subject to direct water or high humidity. Do not operate the digital pen with wet hands, as this may cause a malfunction.

red triangle How many hours can I write before the battery needs to be recharged?
red square You can write for 2 to 3 hours before the battery needs to be recharged. Since the pen recharges in the cradle, it is recommended that you dock the pen when not in use.

red triangle How long will the battery stay charged with the cap on?
red square The battery will stay charged for approximately five days with the cap on.

red triangle How do you recharge the battery?
red square Turn on your computer, connect the pen docking station to the computer, and place the digital pen in its cradle to recharge the battery.

red triangle How often should I recharge the battery?
red square Recharging the battery every 3 to 4 days is advisable if you use the digital pen for 1 to 2 hours a day. It is a good custom to recharge the battery every day if you use the digital pen for 3 to 4 hours a day.

red triangle How long does it take to fully recharge the battery?
red square It takes about 2.5 hours to recharge.

red triangle How long does a fully-charged rechargeable battery operate?
red square Unused, the battery will last approximately two months after full charge. When the battery is left unused with the cap on for about two months, a “low battery warning LED”lights up. If the LED is lighted, be sure to recharge the battery before using the digital pen.

red triangle What is the connecting durability of the cradle and digital pen?
red square The cradle has a 3000-cycle (connecting twice a day for three years) minimum durability.

red triangle Can I replace the battery built-into the pen myself?
red square No, you cannot replace the battery yourself. The warranty for the digital pen is void if you replace the battery yourself.

red triangle Can I replace the ball-point pen myself?
red square Yes, the pen has a clip on the cap to be used as a replacement adapter. Use the hole on the clip to replace the ball-point pen with a new one. Place the tip of the pen into the hole in the pen clip, twist the cap slightly to the side, trapping the pen tip and pull outward to remove the old pen refill. Slide the new refill into place and simply press it into the recess.

red triangle Can I use a spare general ball-point pen available at local retail shops?
red square The warranty for the digital pen becomes void if you use a spare ball-point pen other than the designated spare. Only use ink refills that do not contain carbon, since carbon ink can hide the dot pattern on the paper. Use only a ball-point pen specially designed for the digital pen.

red triangle What is the life span of a digital pen?
red square The life span of a digital pen is about three years. This figure is calculated on the assumption that the digital pen is used for three hours a day.

red triangle How does the digital pen work with digital paper to capture handwriting?
red square When using digital pen and paper, a tiny camera in the pen registers the pen's movements across the grid surface on the paper and stores it as a series of map coordinates. These coordinates correspond to the exact location of the page you're writing on.

red triangle How much memory does the pen have?
red square The pen has 1 megabyte (MB) of memory, which is used to store pen stroke information, paper definitions, and handwritten documents.

red triangle Can the memory be upgraded to store more information?
red square No, the pen's memory capacity has been optimized for its intended use.

red triangle How many handwritten pages does the pen hold?
red square The pen can hold up to 40 full letter-size pages of handwritten content before needing to download the content to the computer.

red triangle Will I lose any of the documents in the pen if the battery dies and I don't recharge it right away?
red square No, the information is stored in a non-volatile flash memory, meaning the contents remain until you download the documents to the computer or reset the pen using a Master Reset Procedure.

red triangle If my pen is lost, can someone else see the information I’ve written with it?
red square No. The data is encrypted on the pen and can only be read by the TransScribe application specifically licensed to you. There are also password protections on our application.
