PenData Solutions
Frequently Asked Questions

red triangleWhat does PenData Solutions do?
red square PenData Solutions enables businesses to more efficiently and reliably manage handwritten information. The PenData TransScribe™ software uses digital pen and paper to securely record, input, and process handwritten text into digital images and text. We move data from the pen to the computer.

red triangle What is the value of the TransScribe software?
red square PenData Solutions delivers immediate value to our customers by significantly reducing the manual labor involved with entering and managing handwritten data into computer systems. This reduction in labor is reflected in increased productivity and decreased operational costs.

red triangle What comprises the TransScribe solution?
red square The PenData TransScribe™ solution is comprised of a desktop software application, a digital pen, and digital paper notepads.

red triangle Do I need to change how I take notes when I use TransScribe?
red square No. You don’t need to change how you take notes. You still use a ballpoint pen and lined note paper to write things down. You just use a different pen and paper.

red triangle What is different about the paper?
red square The same, ordinary paper that you use today is slightly modified with Anoto® digital paper technology. To make the paper digitally legible, a very fine dot pattern is added as a lightly printed background shading.

red triangle What is Anoto technology?
red square Anoto developed a technology using a nearly invisible pattern of dots that covers the page. The pattern is made of a series of tiny dots, arranged in a unique pattern. This pattern is read by the digital pen as the pen writes in ink on the page. The dots indicate the exact location of the pen on the paper, much like a GPS tells you where on the earth the receiver is.

red triangle What is a digital pen?
red square A digital pen is a ballpoint pen with some additional components. It looks like a large pen, about the size of a whiteboard marker. It feels like any normal ballpoint pen when you write. Inside the barrel of the pen are the electronic components that capture the information: an integrated digital camera, an advanced imaging processor, and rechargeable batteries.

red triangle How do digital pens convert ballpoint ink into digital data?
red square The optical system inside the pen automatically records which dots in the page pattern it crosses over. It does this by taking more than 50 readings per second. Each recording determines what has been written or drawn and the exact position of the pen on the page. Also recorded is the particular paper form that was used as well as the time of each pen stroke. The pen’s memory can store up to 40 full letter-sized pages of this information before it has to be uploaded into our application..

red triangle Who makes the pens?
red square There are two pens manufacturers, Maxell and Logitech.

red triangle How secure is my data?
red square The pen records the dot pattern coordinates, not the ink strokes, so it does not contain images of handwritten words. All data in the pen is encrypted with a 64-bit key. Additionally, the data can only be read by our application and administrative access is controlled by a user name and password login procedure. Finally, the pen is emptied once the upload to the computer is complete.

red triangle What validation tools are included?
red square The pen time stamps very coordinate, identifies the unique pen ID that was used, and the identity of the form that was used. Also, a picture-perfect, tamper-proof image of the handwritten form is created in our application. It can be printed out and/or stored within the computer system. For those documents that require a legally binding signature, we can apply advanced biometrics to any signature created with our solution.

red triangleHow is the data displayed once it is uploaded from the pen?
red square The pages can be displayed in two ways: 1) as a picture-perfect image of the handwritten original and 2) as a side-by-side view with the handwritten version on the left and the handwriting recognition (HWR) version on the right.

red triangle What is HWR?
red square Handwriting recognition (HWR) is the software process by which handwritten characters are analyzed and displayed as computer text characters.

red triangle What is the accuracy of the HWR?
red square The average accuracy for generic HWR without a personalized profile is 80%.

red triangle How can I improve the HWR accuracy?
red square PenData supplies a handwriting profile exercise with every pen. Once a unique profile is established for the user of the pen, HWR accuracy averages 95%.

red triangleHow long does it take to install and learn to use TransScribe?
red square It takes about one hour to install the application, complete the handwriting profile exercise, and learn to use the system.
